American Friends of the IHR

The American Friends of the IHR (AFIHR) was founded in 1989 by Professor Jacob M Price (University of Michigan) to support the Institute of Historical Research by funding specific projects. The AFIHR Officers and Board of Directors serve voluntarily and direct US tax-deductible contributions made by the American Friends to these IHR projects.  The IHR is one of ten research Institutes in the School of Advanced Study at the University of London.

The Institute of Historical Research is the oldest part of the University of London in its Senate House site. Since 1921 it has played a national and international role in providing postgraduate training, a specialist library and a range of bibliographical and publishing services, running seminars, an annual conference for historians and a fellowship programme. Along with the Royal Historical Society and the Historical Association, it is the principal voice for the UK history discipline.

What We Do

Recent grants from the American Friends of the IHR have supported a range of exciting projects at the IHR including:

  • Tuition fee bursaries for students on the IHR’s Master’s course in Historical Research
  • The digitization of early-modern American and British-Atlantic history material for British History Online
  • Expanding the IHR Wohl Library’s extensive suite of e-resources, accessible remotely to any library member, including in 2018 the acquisitions of the Cecil Papers, Patrologia Latina, and British Parliamentary Petitions.
